Why is the renowned Indian vocalist Rafi - the man and his music - so loved today?
In truth, the question cannot really be answered. It only matters that he is. But if ever proof was needed of the power of music to reach across the years, then Mohd. Rafi is it. Since his death in 1980 the influence of his music, voice and character has, if anything, become even more powerful. It holds a special poignancy for those of Indian origin throughout the world as his appeal transcends both locations and generations.
If there is one singer today who can carry his torch, it is Sonu Niigaam. Since his very earliest years, Sonu has studied and adored the music of Mohd. Rafi. Famously, it was of a Rafi song that Sonu gave his first public performance aged three, and regular appearances on TV, in films and on-stage since have not dimmed his enthusiasm for the Master.
This unique recording brings together the voice of Sonu Niigaam, the songs of Rafi and the award-winning City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Seal with specially-commissioned arrangments by Tim Pottier in an historic, never-to-be-repeated project.
A true and fitting tribute to the enduring majesty that is Mohd. Rafi.
Live dates: In July there will be three, never-to-be-repeated, live concerts featuring Sonu Niigaam and the CBSO at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham (15/7), the Apollo, Manchester (17/7) & the Coliseum, London (20/7)
