Jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald came to fame in the1930s with the Chick Webb Orchestra. After Webb’s death in 1939 the band was renamed Ella Fitzgerald and her Famous Orchestra, in order to cash in on her enormous popularity. This CD of live instrumental performances from the Savoy and Grand Terrace CafĂ© in 1939 and 1940 features Eddie Barefield, Teddy McRae, Bobby Stark, Taft Jordan, Sandy Williams and Tammy Fulford.

Recorded in 1977 for Dutch radio and originally released on LP in 1981 this classic album by the Chicago-born tenor saxophonist Von Freeman is available once again on CD.
When Downbeat reviewed the LP it was awarded five stars and the reviewer said it was “probably the best tenor saxophone album of 1981”. The CD release contains one previously unissued title, “After Dark”.
