    KEITH JARRETT / GARY PEACOCK / JACK 1737326DEJOHNETTE

         My Foolish Heart

          Cat No. 1737326 (2 CDs)

     Keith Jarrett: piano; Gary Peacock: double-bass;
     Jack DeJohnette: drums

    18th ECM recording from Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette - widely viewed as jazz’s greatest piano trio - issued as the group approaches its 25th anniversary

    A double album recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2001, with liner notes by Keith Jarrett

    Exhilarating and playful performance which romps through the history of jazz with pieces by Fats Waller, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan and more, as well as show tunes and standards from the Great American Songbook

    Essential purchase for all jazz enthusiasts

  • Strong melodies and captivating rhythms will also draw in the general listener
  • Music/backgroundThe Montreux Festival performance is – in terms of the musical range addressed – one of the most comprehensive in the discography of Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette. One of its biggest surprises is the inclusion of two Fats Waller tunes, absolutely delightful interpretations of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose” which close and open the two halves of the set. It’s rare indeed to hear Jarrett playing out of the post-stride styles of the 1930s, and with tremendous rhythmic drive. The mood is extended On “You Took Advantage Of Me”, written originally for Rodgers & Hart’s 1928 show ‘Present Arms’. No less exhilarating is a terrific version of Thelonious Monk’s “Straight, No Chaser” that catapults toward free expression in its final moments. But the whole double album feels like a celebration. Cheered on by a capacity audience, the trio are in absolutely top form and return to the stage for two encores: a high-flying “On Green Dolphin Street” and a beautiful, pellucid account of the ballad “Only The Lonely”.

All of Jarrett’s albums do well at retail. His ECM albums have sold a total of around 15 million copies. The direct and outgoing nature of My Foolish Heart will likely make it one of the best-loved recordings of the group colloquially referred to as the Standards Trio.

Jarrett’s re-immersion in the world of jazz standards began in 1983 with the prolific recording session that produced Standards Vol. 1, Standards Vol. 2 and Changes. In preparation for a special reissue 3-CD set as Setting Standards, these discs are being re-mastered in 24bit/192kHz improved sound.
