On “On The Real Side” the legendary trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s is backed by The New Jazz Composers Octet, which features David Weiss on trumpet, Myron Walden on alto sax, Steve Davis on trombone, Craig Handy on tenor sax and flute and Russell Malone on guitar. Hubbard revisits some of his own classic compositions, specially re-arranged by trumpeter David Weiss, trombonist Steve Davis and bassist Dwayne Burno. Freddie plays flugelhorn exclusively throughout and while the dazzling speed, stunning high note facility and uncanny endurance may be diminished, the phrasing is still quintessentially Hubbard.

The British-born musician Tony Grey is a rising star of the electric bass guitar. A Berklee College of Music graduate, he has played on John McLaughlin’s 2006 recording ‘Industrial Zen’ and all four recordings by the Japanese keyboard wiz Hiromi. On Chasing Shadows, Grey steps out in impressive fashion as a bandleader, accomplished composer and outstanding soloist. Surrounding himself with a stellar cast of improvisers and fellow virtuosos, including harmonica ace Gregoire Maret guitarist Lionel Loueke and pianist Hiromi, Grey delivers with authority, taste and inspiration on his fully-realized international debut.

This 3 CD set, which spans the first two decades of the legendary vocalist Ella Fitzgerald’s career, is packaged in a luxury box including a 96 page colour booklet, illustrated with rare photographs, sheet-music, record labels and original sleeves. The three CDs are presented in individual sleeves and there are 68 titles taken from the best sources available which have been 24-bit re-mastered. The total playing time is 3 hours 45 minutes.

Pinetop Perkins, who celebrates his 95th birthday in June 2008, is one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen still performing. He has been playing blues and boogie piano for more than six decades – including a twelve-year stint with Muddy Waters’ legendary outfit. In addition he has worked and recorded with the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Nighthawk, Earl Hooker, B.B. King, Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf. On this set of classic blues standards Perkins is surrounded by more than a dozen legendary musicians, including guitarists Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Jimmie Vaughan, bassist Willie Kent, drummer Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and many more.

This is the second album from the American-born saxophonist Allison Neale, who is based in the UK. . An altoist from the school of Paul Desmond and Art Pepper, Neale is joined Gary Kavanagh, a fine bebop trumpeter. The music for this new recording takes its starting point from the crafted arrangements and attention to detail that are the hallmark of the 1950’s recordings of Gigi Gryce, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd and Benny Golson. The new recording from guitarist Trevor Warren’s Disassembler, features a changed line-up with Annie Whitehead on trombone and Dave Priseman on trumpet and flugelhorn who join saxophonist Mark Lockheart. Exploring modern dance patterns within a jazz improvising context, the music blends with specially made ambient recordings and samples that segue the tracks or even form part of the music to create an unusual mixture of jazz, rock, war, street and café noise, Navajo Elders and Mongolian throat singers. An album that is artistically and musically as entertaining as it is challenging.

The Berlin-based musician Barbara Buchholz is one of the world’s leading performers on the theremin, Developed in the 1920s, it was the forerunner of all electronic instruments. On Moonstruck, she uses the theremin as a solo instrument; elsewhere adding textures and tones, and sometimes providing the base on which other instruments build. The musicians featured on this album play a multitude of instruments and they include the innovative trumpeter Arve Henriksen, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, clarinettist Tilman Dehnard and guitarist Thomas Weber.

Sounds unlikely, but the Banana Hunters from Berne contradict any assumptions that you have to hail from the US to play this kind of music. Featuring a seven piece line-up of horns, keyboards, guitar and rhythm section, and fronted by vocalist Renate Scheurer, the Banana Hunters are a band whose inspiration comes from such 70’s and 80’s heroes as Sly Stone, James Brown, and seminal jazz-funk outfit, The Crusaders.
