Sales Points:

  • ECM leader debut for young Dutch pianist Wolfert Brederode and his new quartet
  • The gentle pulsations of the piano of Brederode have played an important role on the highly acclaimed ECM recordings of singer Susanne Abbuehl
  • Pan-European band of gifted players, including clarinettist Claudio Puntin, Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer and Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen, now commit their improvisational energies to the lyric flow of his reflective music
  • “Flow” is the key word, the currents of this gently, undulating river of sound taking the musicians to new places
  • Music/Artist background:   Born in 1974, Dutch pianist Wolfert Brederode studied classical and jazz piano at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. His touch is a poetic one, appropriately given his ongoing collaboration with singer Susanne Abbuehl – well-known for setting poetry and prose to music. Brederode has played a central role on Abbuehl’s ECM discs, also writing some of the music for April – Susanne in turn is co-composer of one piece here: everything else is from the leader’s pen. Brederode writes quiet, patient, reflective music that has also attracted the attention of theatre directors and choreographers in Holland. As a sideman he has collaborated with international musicians including Dave Liebman, Jeanne Lee, Arve Henriksen, Trygve Seim, Wolfgang Puschnig, and many others.

The cast assembled on Currents plays his music with sensitivity. Swiss/Italian clarinettist Claudio Puntin is active on both the classical and improvised music scenes. Artists with whom he has worked include Hermeto Pascoal, Jim Black, Dave Douglas, Nils Wogram, Anders Jormin, the Ensemble Modern and Fred Frith. His ECM album Ylir with Icelandic singer/violinist Gerdur Gunnarsdottir was widely praised. Leading Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen appears also on Jacob Young’s new album Sideways (172 7080) – released simultaneously with Currents. In addition to his ECM recordings with Young, Trgyve Seim and The Source, and Parish with Bobo Stenson, Eilertsen has played live with Kenny Wheeler, Pat Metheny, Nils Petter Molvær, John Taylor, Christian Wallumrød and many others. Samuel Rohrer studied in Bern and at Boston’s Berklee College. He has worked across most expressions of contemporary improvising with Charles Gayle, Sirone, Michel Portal, Ferenc Snetberger, Joao Paulo, Markus Stockhausen, Arild Andersen, Wolfgang Muthspiel and many others. He also leads his own band, Tree.
