KOOPMAN/AMSTERDAM BAROQUE Buxtehude: Opera Omnia VII - Arias, 2CD CC72246 ORCHESTRA & CHOIR Concertos and Cantatas In 2007 Ton Koopman completed a universally acclaimed set of recordings covering the complete cantatas of J. S. Bach, the last volume of which, (CC72222), recently received a BBC Music Magazine Award. With this latest release of Vocal Works, (Volume 3), he has now finished his series of recording of the works of Dieterich Buxtehude. As with the two previous volumes he directs the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir and several highly regarded soloists, amongst which are the soprano Johannette Zomer, the alto Bogna Bartosz, the tenor Jörg Dürmüller, and the bass Klaus Mertens. The 2CD set features arias, concertos and cantatas, including two substantial works, “Eins bitte ich vom Herrn“, BuxWV 24, and “Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr“, BuxWV 41.

BERTRAND CHAMAYOU Mendelssohn: Piano Music CD V5131 This delightful anthology of piano music by Felix Mendelssohn, performed by the brilliant young French pianist Bertrand Chamayou, interweaves many of the composer’s shorter pieces, (a Prelude, two Scherzos, and two of his lieder transcribed by Liszt), with more substantial works, including several of the “Songs without words”, the three Etudes opus 104b, two of his opus 33 Caprices, the Rondo Capriccioso, and the Variations Sérieuses.

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS/LIVERPOOL PHIL. Vaughan Williams: Serenade To Music 2CD ALBCD009 This release is a unique and rare recording of Vaughan Williams conducting his Serenade to Music from a performance in 1951 at the Royal Festival Hall with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The soloists, many of whom were in the first performance in 1938, include Isobel Baillie, Astra Desmond, Richard Lewis and Heddle Nash. The recording is a deeply expressive and romantic interpretation. Also on this 2CD set is the Pilgrim’s Journey, arranged by Roy Douglas and a bonus disc features Vaughan Williams talking about the teachings of Parry and Stanford as well as a short extract from the funeral service of Vaughan Williams.

PHILIP GLASS Cassandra's Dream (Woody Allen soundtrack) CD OMM0038 (Film released in UK on 23 May) The original motion picture score by Philip Glass to Woody Allen’s latest movie – which is on general release in the UK from 23 May – Cassandra’s Dream is the third of the legendary New York director’s films to be shot in London and is an intense story of two Cockney brothers who fall out over money and a young actress and are lured into crime with tragic results. The stellar British/Irish cast is headed by Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell (who adorn the sleeve), with Tom Wilkinson and newcomer Hayley Atwell.

RUSSELL DAVIES Philip Glass: Waiting for the Barbarians 2CD OMM0039 World premiere recording of Philip Glass’s recent highly-praised opera based on J M Coetzee’s powerful novel and set to a libretto by Christopher Hampton. This “genuinely moving” work, a harrowing allegory of the war between oppressors and the oppressed, receives its UK premiere at London’s Barbican on 12 June with the same cast, orchestra, chorus and conductor, Dennis Russell Davies, as on these two beautifully-packaged CDs.
BEETHOVEN ORCHESTER BONN / DAVIES Philip Glass: Concerto Project Vol III CD OMM0042 The premiere recording of Glass’s Concerto Grosso is paired with one of his most performed works, the Concerto for Saxophone Quartet, on this third disc in a series documenting all eight concertos that Philip Glass has written to date. Both concertos are played by the musicians who premiered them: the Beethoven Orchester Bonn conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and the internationally renowned Raschèr Saxophone Quartet.

PAUL BARNES (piano) The American Virtuoso: Glass, Barber, Tower CD OMM0036 American pianist Paul Barnes performs his own solo transcription of Philip Glass’s Piano Concerto No 2 in a virtuosic recital devoted to US composers. Besides this premiere, he plays the landmark 1950 Sonata for piano and the haunting Ballade and Nocturne by Samuel Barber, and two short colourful pieces from Joan Tower’s No Longer Very Clear.
WENDY SUTTER (cello) Philip Glass: Songs and Poems for Solo Cello CD OMM0037 Two world premiere recordings of pieces for cello by Philip Glass are paired on this debut solo recording by the American Wendy Sutter. The first, Songs and Poems for solo cello, composed for her last year, emphasises the singing quality of the instrument (here she plays on the renowned “ex Vatican Stradivarius”) while Tissues, written originally for Godfrey Reggio’s celebrated film Naqoyqatsi but not used in the final cut, also features percussionist David Cossin and Glass himself on piano.

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Twenty Early Songs - 'Kissing Her Hair' CD ALBCD002 This second release on Albion Records is a collection of early Vaughan Williams songs, featuring Iain Burnside (piano), Roderick Williams (baritone), Sarah Fox (soprano) and Andrew Staples (tenor). One of the somgs, Rondel, is previously unpublished and unrecorded. Serenely beautiful, it was written when the composer was only 22 and will change perceptions of the quality of music Vaughan Williams was composing at this early age. The album is being released in February 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the composer.

TON KOOPMAN Buxtehude: Opera Omnia Vl - Harpsichord 2 2CD CC72245 In this sixth and final volume of the Opera Omnia of Dieterich Buxtehude, Ton Koopman performs the remainder of the composer’s impressive but sadly neglected output of harpsichord works. As president of the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society, Koopman is considered to be the world’s leading authority on his music.

RADIO CHAMBER ORCH/FISCHER Willem van Otterloo: Sinfonietta/Suite/Serenade CD CC72180 The award-winning “Original Recordings of 1950-1960” by the legendary conductor Willem van Otterloo, was issued by Challenge Classics in 2005 (CC 72142). Van Otterloo was also, however, a composer in his own right, and although he left only about a dozen compositions, this new CD which gathers together the best of his work proves without doubt that his music is well worth investigation.
