PAUL HANSON Frolic in the Land of Plenty CD ABLX009 This innovative album by bassoonist Paul Hanson re-defines the role of his chosen instrument – previously almost exclusively associated with classical music. By electrifying his double reed instrument and incorporating elements of bebop, fusion, Bulgarian, ambient and rock-fuelled grunge, Hanson pushes the envelope on what his notoriously unwieldy instrument can do. He’s joined by an all-star line-up including Dennis Chambers on drums, violinist Tracy Silverman and keyboardist Eric Levy. This is earth-shaking stuff by a musical renegade who is clearly forging a new path on a most unusual instrument.
ALEX MACHACEK Improvision CD ABLX007 This formidable power trio of Austrian guitarist Alex Machacek, 5-string electric bassist Matthew Garrison and drummer Jeff Sipe is impossibly intense, dripping with staggering virtuosity and fertile ideas and seething with the kind of raucous improvisational abandon that hasn’t been seen since the heyday of Tribal Tech. For fans of acknowledged guitar monsters like Allan Holdsworth and Scott Henderson, the opening track of their new album says it all: "There’s A New Sheriff In Town."
GARY WILLIS Actual Fiction CD ABLX006 Joining the world-class electric bassist Gary Willis on this ambitious avant-groove outing is his long-time band-mate in Tribal Tech, drummer Kirk Covington along with drummer David Gomez. Willis’s innovative playing and compositions span a wide range of musical styles and influences from drum’n’bass to funky groove-based outings, melodic ballads on the fretless bass and hard-hitting fusion.
